The Law of the Garbage Truck™ copyright 2007 David J. Pollay
How often do you let other people’s nonsense change your mood? Do you let a bad driver, rude waiter, curt boss, or an insensitive employee ruin your day? Unless you’re the Terminator, you’re probably set back on your heels. However, the mark of your success is how quickly you can refocus on what’s important in your life.
Sixteen years ago I learned this lesson. And I learned it in the back of a New York City taxi cab. Here’s what happened.
I hopped in a taxi, and we took off for Grand Central Station. We were driving in the right lane when all of a sudden, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of us. My taxi driver slammed on his brakes, the car skidded, the tires squealed, and at the very last moment our car stopped just one inch from the other car’s back-end.
I couldn’t believe it. But then I couldn’t believe what happened next. The driver of the other car, the guy who almost caused a big accident, whipped his head around and he started yelling bad words at us. How do I know? Ask any New Yorker, some words in New York come with a special face. And he even threw in a one finger salute! I couldn’t believe it!
But then here’s what really blew me away. My taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. And I mean, he was friendly. So, I said, “Why did you just do that!? This guy could have killed us!” And this is when my taxi driver told me what I now call, “The Law of the Garbage Truck™.” He said:
Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of garbage, full of
frustration, full of anger, and full of disappointment. As their garbage piles
up, they look for a place to dump it. And if you let them, they’ll dump it on
you.
So when someone wants to dump on you, don’t take it personally. Just smile,So I started thinking, how often do I let Garbage Trucks run right over me? And how often do I take their garbage and spread it to other people at work, at home, or on the street? It was then that I said, “I don’t want their garbage and I’m not going to spread it anymore.”
wave, wish them well, and move on. Believe me. You’ll be happier.
I began to see Garbage Trucks. Like in the movie “The Sixth Sense,” the little boy said, “I see Dead People.” Well now “I see Garbage Trucks.” I see the load they’re carrying. I see them coming to dump it. And like my taxi driver, I don’t take it personally; I just smile, wave, wish them well, and I move on.
One of my favorite football players of all time was Walter Payton. Every day on the football field, after being tackled, he would jump up as quickly as he hit the ground. He never dwelled on a hit. Payton was ready to make the next play his best. Over the years the best players from around the world in every sport have played this way: Tiger Woods, Nadia Comaneci, Muhammad Ali, Bjorn Borg, Chris Evert, Michael Jordan, Jackie Robinson, and Pele are just some of those players. And the most inspiring leaders have lived this way: Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Gandhi, and Martin Luther King.
See, Roy Baumeister, a psychology researcher from the University of Florida, found in his extensive research that you remember bad things more often than good things in your life. You store the bad memories more easily, and you recall them more frequently.
So the odds are against you when a Garbage Truck comes your way. But when you follow The Law of the Garbage Truck™, you take back control of your life. You make room for the good by letting go of the bad.
The best leaders know that they have to be ready for their next meeting. The best sales people know that they have to be ready for their next client. And the best parents know that they have to be ready to welcome their children home from school with hugs and kisses, no matter how many garbage trucks they might have faced that day. All of us know that we have to be fully present, and at our best for the people we care about.
The bottom line is that successful people do not let Garbage Trucks take over their life.
What about you? What would happen in your life, starting today, if you let more garbage trucks pass you by?
Here’s my bet: You’ll be happier.

David, great article! I have to say that in my house “if mama aint happy, aint nobody happy” and I know I have that power to change my surroundings! I choose to let the garbage go right by most days, some days are easier than others obviously, but boy what power we all have. As a mom and working in a Drs. office I am faced with people dumping their garbage all day long, what I gift I received when I finally realized that it is my choice as to whether I keep it or let it pass me by. So long garbage!!!

I currently work with loads of wonderful volunteers who are doing tough work for a cause they believe in, but aren’t always interacting with people who share the same sentiments they have. Oftentimes, people will purposely engage my volunteers in arguments, or simply walk by and say negative things about the cause they’re devoting themselves to. The Law of the Garbage Truck helps the volunteers (and quite frankly, me) keep those moments in the right perspective, and helps us to keep on working for our cause. I handed a copy of your column to one of my volunteers this weekend(she loved it)–I wanted to let you know that this will travel with me and will become one of my go-to items in my volunteer kit! - Katie B.
Mr. David, honestly when i heard and when i saw you filming the video about I am not a garbage truck on IPM 2008 with the Delegates it was interesting but i was lost. I really didn't know what is the whole point.
But now after reading your post about the "The Law of The Garbage Truck" I really understand it and i totally agree with it.
Great post!
I will not accept garbage in my life! =O)
Honest Regards from Skopje!

David
Thanks for putting this together in such a way that can be used by many... there is no place for this... how different our communitities would be if everyone took the pledge of the Law of the Garbage truck...Saludos!!!
Hi Melanie!
There’s no doubt how important your role is at home and at the office. The people in your life are blessed that you are letting the garbage trucks pass you by! I love the “so long garbage” close to your post!
Thanks Melanie!
Best to you,
David
Hi Katie,
What a great application of The Law of the Garbage Truck™!
Your volunteers are lucky that you are helping them to understand how important it is to focus on the mission of their work, and to let the less than positive reactions of others slide by. There’s too much good to focus on then to fixate on the unpleasant interactions.
Best wishes to you on your mission! You will be successful!
Best to you,
David
Hi Martina!

Best to you,
David
Thanks Halle!
Thanks for sharing The Law of the Garbage Truck™ with your whole family! It surely applies to everyone, no matter their age!
Best to you,
David

Hi Amanda!
Thank you so much! You are so right; life is harder when we are burdened with a constant focus on frustration and disappointment. Good for you for letting the things you cannot control pass you by!
Thanks for your support!
David
Hi there, Sarah woke up this morning with the law of the garbage truck on her mind...she's using it on a daily basis to help deal with a not-so-nice classmate! Thanks David!
Halle B
David:
I work and interact with thousands of employees on our business... it is powerful to observe how moods drive the overall organization. Thanks again for bringing your thinking about this thru the Law of the garbage Truck! All the best, Alberto
Thanks for sharing Halle! And good for Sarah for “smiling, waving, wishing her classmate well,” and staying focused on what’s important to her!
Best to you,
David
Thank you Alberto! It is amazing how contagious our moods are, and how easy it is to let negative and unproductive ones dominate our attention. Your business is lucky to have you as one of its leaders!
Best to you,
David
David, Thanks so much for your wonderful story. Ever since I heard you tell this story in a speech three years ago I have been letting more and more garbage pass me by. Letting Garbage pass us by without taking it on gives us the freedom to quickly refocus on our own important things in life. I don't carry it with me to work, back home after the day is over, or to the 12 year olds I coach on the baseball diamond. It helps me be at my best!
I have read and heard many in the field of Psychology but I have never come upon someone like you. With your stories you get right to the heart of the matter. I take away something I can put to use every day. "The Garbage Truck" is a perfect example. Thanks.
Max
Wow, This is amazing! After reading The Law of the Garbage Truck it made me so aware of how many garbage trucks are out there! Everywhere I go there is someone looking to dump. Now I can smile and move on! I look forward to more articles like this one that I can apply to my daily life...thanks David!
David, I love this article and I love the garbage truck pledge. It definitely helps me to put things in perspective that I am the only person who can keep myself in a positive frame of mind and I do not have to accept negativity in my life. That is very powerful!
Hi Chris,
Thanks for the great post! And good for you for integrating The Law of the Garbage Truck in your life! It’ clear that you and a whole lot of people in your life are benefiting as a result!
Best to you,
David

Hi Missy,
You have it exactly right! Good for you for keeping focused on what is important to you and letting the negative things you cannot control pass you by. It is amazing how your life changes when you do what you are doing. Thanks for the post Missy!
Best to you,
David
David,
Inspirational as always……
There are indeed plenty of garbage trucks out there, and you would not believe how many of those trucks wants dump on the next opportunity they see. It is a thought that always cross our minds but we never take it into a great consideration. You have clearly pin point what in the manner that will make most of us aware to avoid those trucks.
As for me from now there is a big sign “garbage dumping is strictly prohibited”
Regards
Gaspar
Hey David, this is a great article and I'm quite impressed with the kind of work you have undertaken. Well, I'm Sharmin and I was on Tori's team on AIESEC in Pakistan MC and I'm from India :).
Last year a movie was released 'Lagey Raho Munnabhai', a bollywood one. If possible, you can grab it as it talks on the same lines.
Gandhiji too preached that if someone slaps you, you should give him your other cheek.
Have a great time!
Good for you Gaspar! And when you let Garbage Trucks pass you by, the happier, kinder, and more successful you will be. And then all the people who you meet in life will reap the benefit!
Best to you!
David
Hi Sharmin!
Great to hear from you! You are so right: Gandhi focused on what was important and what he could control to help lead his country, and he let everything else pass him by. And Gandhi positively, and dramatically changed India and the world.
Thanks also for the movie recommendation!
Best to you!
David
wow david!!!
This is so relevant to me ight now especialy at the restuarant where I work.I experience it from my abusive and rude boss who has divorced twice in his life, hence alot of issues in his life or in your words grabage in his truck.i used to allow him to get to me but with this knowledge i will deficately know how best to deal with him the next time he chooses me as his garbage dumping site.
thanks alot david!
will always be inspired by you ever since AIESEC IC 2006!
Thisile
Hi Thisile!
Great to hear from you! And good for you; you are focusing on what you can control! Your boss clearly has challenges, and you are not making them yours. You will enjoy your job more, your customers will benefit, and interestingly enough, your boss will benefit too!
My best to you!
David
Hi david,
i must confess that this one of the most inspirint text ive ever read. full of learning
thanks you
David,
I really want to say that this is the most impressive piece of article I have read in the recent past.I beleive it completely depends on an individual to look at each day the way he wants it to be.
It is difficult for a day to be good for a person if he comes out in the outside world early morning with negative thoughts.
I will surely try not let any Garbage trucks affect my life further.
Regards
Amit Narang

Thanks David. Those Garbage trucks keep passing me by... and I have you to thank. You must be a very special person to recognize the depth of this philosopy and to put it in the vernacular that we all can understand and put into practice. I'm glad it is reaching people all over the world because if we have ever needed it, the time is now. Through the action of each one of us, we can help spread the word, and we will make the world a more beautiful place.
Thanks again. Lil
Thanks Lil!
I sure appreciate your support! Thanks for being a part of the No Garbage Trucks! Revolution!
And thanks for spreading the word!
Best to you,
David
Hi David,
Read your column and some of the comments posted i must say some are really more inspiring as it were than the LAW OF THE GARBAGE TRUCK in it self it points out how we all are connected in varying degrees to our experiences in Life, however if you live in y reality in Lagos Nigeria, i strongly believe we'll all see the need to not only wave at the garbage 'dumpers' but you'll turn out to be Land fills' one way or the other.
Peekay
